Urad Dal is also called Black Gram. It has its origins in ancient India in which it became first cultivated and has remained a staple ever since. It’s a major factor in lots of well-known Indian dishes along with Dosas, Idli, Papadums, and Dal Makhani.
Urad Dal is sold as both a “black lentil” that is generally the whole bean or a “white lentil” that has the black skins removed to reveal a creamy white interior. Urad Dal is a completely nutritious bean, containing plant fiber, protein, low-glycemic carbohydrates, minerals vitamins, and antioxidants.
